I am fixin' to replace a 4.0L 95' Explorer that has served me well for 155,000+ miles. I have only had to but about $500 non-maintenance into the vehicle since new and the engine seems to be running flawlessly.

I am replacing it with a '03 Explorer. I pull a boat and trailer that weigh about 4,400 pounds. This is below the 5,800 pound rating (w/ towing package) for the 4.0 in the new Explorers, but I am considering getting the 4.6 liter engine to reduce the burden when pulling my boat.

My only hang up is that the 4.0 Liter has been flawless for me thus far and I'm a little apprehensive about going to the 4.6 liter.

Anyone with experience with the 4.6 liter engine or opinions about towing with either engine?

Thanks.

We've got a buddy who has the SOHC in his '99 X and has hauled loads from VA to Colorado, and all around Colorado with out a problem. Dad had an '02 XLT with the 4.6L and loved it. He hauled everything (rocks, mulch, college furniture) without a problem. He thought the 4.6 was even better than the 5.0, better power, flatter torque curve, and more efficient. Dad could get 19 on the freeway if he babied it, where our buddy can get 21 with his SOHC. Both motors will tow fine, but the 4.6 has some redicously high tow rating. Anyways, can't go wrong, I guess its just on how much you plan on towing... Just my $ 0.02
