I was wondering if anyone knew whether a Gibson Dual Extreme exhaust system would fit on a '96 Explorer XLT AWD. I've looked at a couple of specs and all of the F-series models are listed, as well as a few Expeditions, but I have yet to find any Explorers on the list. The system is a simple bolt-on that I've been wanting for a long time, I just don't wanna fork over 500 bucks and find out it doesn't fit. Does anyone know if it will fit or not? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

i got single in and dual out 40 series flowmasters on my 01 sport and i paid like 425 for mine and i got the spare tire still.

Are you thinkin of getting single in and dual out gibson or true dual exhaust.

Re: Exhaust

I plan on getting single in, dual out because I don't want to convert to a true dual. I know Flowmasters are pretty universal but I'm still trying to figure out if a Gibson would work as well.

Stock you have a dual in with a single out.

I have a dual in-out Flowmaster 40 muffler and love it. Some like the Flowmaster 50 series with the rear cats removed. Others are starting to sway to Magnaflow but I think they sound too hollow sounding when they get broken in.(I have both and prefer Flowmaster)

Ive only heard a Gibson catback on a Tundra V8 and it didnt sound that much better than stock. Sorry cant help you with fitment.

The F series is not going to be a bolt on. The only Gibson set up for Explorers is a single in single out with a flange welded to the front of the muffler to bolt on to the stock muffler flange.

Look on Summit Racing's site. They have an actual picture of the Gibson cat back system.

Been there

I installed the Gibson single exhaust 2.5" pipes and muffler a couple days ago on my 97 sport. It was almost an easy install. My biggest problem was cutting the exhaust pipe, which was accomplished with a rented pipe cutter. My other big hassle was with the fact the pipe I received was, at least to the best of my knowledge, had the hanger installed backwards. The instructions said to simply place the rear hanger in stock position but, there was no way that was going to happen. I finally figured out to move the stock hanger to the outer side of the body frame. I'll post some pics later on that. I am extremely pleased with the pipes and muffler. Sounds good at the lower gears and isn't to annoying loud. Not sure on over all performance just yet.

I would recommend it though.

Here are my pics, sorry for bad quality, they are cell phone pics, lost my camera in my latest move.

Here is where my biggest problem was, the hanger needed to be removed and placed on the opposite side of the frame and one hole back. The original holes are the ones on the far right side and the hanger was towards the inside.
