Hello X fans:

I need some help. Introduced a 95 Explorer in the family about 6 months ago. 4x4, 63K. Need Help with the following OBD 1 codes:

Code 332 -- Insufficent EGR Flow
Code 647 -- Incorrect 3rd gear ratio

647 should be easy. The O/D light is flashing, there's no O/D, and she silips / thumps hard upon deacceleration around 10 MPH. I presume I'm the latest victim of 4R55E failure, and it's time for a rebuild.

Code 332 is a little more difficult. I've had it to the local Ford place, they were stumped. I changed the EGR vacuum solenoid and the valve. No Luck. Mil activates usually within 1-2 miles after code clears. I have been told there is likely an "obstruction", but where?

I can live with the 332, but would like to fix it. However, the trans needs immediate attention. Please respond with the following:

Rebuild trans or new trans? From Where? I plan to do the work myself.

Cost to rebuild? Cost of new?

Thanks for the help...it's appreciated and needed badly.

John

For the EGR. Pull all the vacuum lines and blow through, them, make sure you have airflow. Also blow into the metal lines that come out of the valve. If they are all clear, considering changing the DPFE.

For the tranny, I say reset the computer. Others may disagree, but it may be just a small fault that will fix itself.

Ok. I must confess my ignorance, what is a DPFE?

Any other ideas on the tranny. I'll try resetting the computer as that's easy...but I think theres a little more wrong it's driving really bad.

Actually Jason is correct. When I experienced this last year on my Ranger, that was the first thing my tranny guy said to do, reset the computer. Guess what, it worked. It came on again some 3 months later, took it in for a new filter, add 5 qts.,reset computer, has been fine for about a year now. The TCC (Torque Convertor Control) solenoid in the tranny (1 of 7) is notoroisly weak.
And the r/r of the DPFE on my 95 X also cured that code.
