In search of free advice (i'm a broke grad student  ) I came across this site, hopefull someone can help with the 3 (hopefully) minor problems Im having with my 98 Explorer.

1. The 4WD hi and lo warning lights have been blinking in my dash. It started a few months ago then went away when I pushed in a loose fuse. Started again a few weeks ago. They blink for about a minute every 10 minutes or so. (I have 4wd auto)

2. The headlights stopped turning on about the same time as the above problem. The daytime running lights, tail lights and parking lights work okay. Replacing the bulbs does not fix the problem, could it be the headlamp switch?

3. There is a rattling noise that sounds like the tab of a soda can chinging around. Seems to be coming from near the wheel well. THis has been happening for a few months and worse when the vehicle is warm.

I have limited mechanical skills but do have a handy neighbor that can do a lot but cannot seem to diagnose the problems.

Please help! :D

The flashing 4wd light is a code for a problem. You need to count the flashes then do a search on the forum, I'm sure the codes are listed on here somewhere. Or take it to your local parts store. Many will pull the OBD codes for free. Headlights sound like a relay. Check under the hood, I think that's where the relay box is on a '98, but I'm not sure. The rattle sounds possibly brake related. I would have them checked (or have your neighbor check) to see if anything is loose or worn. Those are the easiest solutions. I'd do these first, then move on to more difficult solutions if there's still a problem. Good luck and keep us informed....
