I pulled the cam position sensor to correct a P340 code. When I got the sensor off, it was wiped out inside. I pulled the synchronizer and found it was toast. Part was $115 from Ford house (not as bad as I was prepared for.) I took careful note of the orientation of the internals of the synch. when I pulled it, but I wonder if anyone knows proper timing going back? Also, can timing be checked with a light after getting cranked? The vehicle ran for a couple months with the CEL on, so I wonder how big a deal the whole thing is? Thanks for any help!

What motor you got?

Sorry, been a long day. '96 XLT with 4.0 6-cyl.

Basically it has to go back the exact same way it came out. You cannot adjust the timing on our Explorers so if you don't have it lined up properly the motor will probably not even start. If you remember the orientation of the CKP then you should be good to go. I have a diagram of how my 5.0 sensor goes in a TDC but I'm sure its different for yours.

I hope I know what I am talking about. :p

Thanks! You probably know what a pain it is to get to the thing. I think on your V-8 it's up front, but on a 6 it is a killer. When I knew I was going to pull it, I barred the engine around till I could feel what I thought was a slot in the thing. Turns out the entire piece was folded into a ball, but I thind I can get real close.
