the temp guage seems to go up too a 1/4 or so, i asked around and was told to change the t stat, did that now seems to be a little more heat, (not enuff) gauge goes to about the same spot. what could it be? should i change the heater core? also my blower seems to only blow on "high" is that the blower or switch or something different? thanks for any help!

Sounds like the cooling fan clutch. Mine is going bad too. Try spinning the fan by hand when the engine is cold and OFF. It should turn freely, if not its time to get the clutch for the fan.

thanks, i'll check it shortly, but wouldnt that make to overheat if the fan wasnt turning fast?

No the fan should slip when its cold, so it would turn slower (less tension) to get heat, then the engine heats up making it slip less (more tension) and cool it off.

Put a new radiator cap on there too, chances are yours is shot.

thanks guys, i'll grab a cap just in case, it looks pretty good though, my fan has cracks around the hub, one i see is cracked all the way through, from front to back(front of car to back) . and bolted to clutch good-it doesnt wobble. it seems to move freely, if i touch it with my finger i can spin it, icant flick it to spin at all, as if on ball bearings

Hey, you could have a stopped up heater core, I've never changed one in an explorer, but I have in other ford b bodies and it's a snap. My 92 X has great heat after about 5 minutes, even on the single digit days, so it's not endemic to x's, bronco II's, and rangers, I've owned all 3 and they all had great heaters. If the fan spins easily when cold and engine off, the fan clutch is working properly when cold, heat the engine up to full operating temp, then shut it off, the fan should be noticeably stiffer to turn. It's also possible but much less likely that your heater hoses are collapsing, I'd probably replace the T stat with a known good 195 degree one (buy 3 cheap ones at autozone, etc boil them in a pot of water and keep the one that opens fullest, take the other 2 back), the radiator and heater hoses and the heater core. make sure to go thru several heat/cool cycles topping off the coolant several times till all the air is gone, you can use the resevoir for the topping off, no need to remove the radiator cap, just keep the resevoir topped off till it no longer needs coolant added to it. Good Luck.
