Ok, i'm sure you all know how lame the 4.0L is in my 94 explorer, it really pisses me off when i have to keep it floored all the time just to keep it going 75 up big hills, but anyway, i've owned it since it was brand new, and it's always been this slow. Has anyone done any bolt-ons with any great success? I know getting a lot of power isn't gonna be cheap, and no matter what i do it'll never run with my Z-28, i don't expect it to, but i would like it to atleast be able to keep up with a 4.3 blazer, maybe even be a little faster Dead Link Removed How much horse can you really get out of a chip, or a filter, or a throttle body, or a mass air flow sensor, or headers or out of anything else. And what would you recommend to go with first, as i'm on a budget here. Thanks alot!

Ok, i put together this package, tell me what you think, true-rev induction (conical filter) $89.95; Superchips chip $229.00; Vortech 73mm MaxFlow mass air flow $189; That vanir throttle bottle for $115, and pacesetter headers for $260. What kind of horsepower increases do you think i could expect with this? Also are there any other parts anyone would recommend instead of these? I'm on a budget, so i'm looking at the cheapest i can get. I already have flowmaster exhaust.

I would start with a cat-back. Then I would try a K&N filter along with cutting holes in the bottom half of the airbox. Cat-backs can vary in prices. Depending on your budget, you could spend anywhere from just over a hundred dollars to three hundred or so. I opted to buy a stainless, shorter than stock, low restriction muffler from Ultra-flo and took it to a local exhaust shop to have all new 2.25 inch pipes installed along with the muffler. It ran me about $160 total and I got them to hang it high and out of the way of any road junk. There are probably cat-backs like Flowmaster which a lot of members have raved about due to the value vs performance. Or you could go with Borla which run quite a bit more due to its stainless steel contruction. Whatever the route you take, freeing up your exhaust will help. Since I already had a K&N drop in filter, I tried cutting holes in the bottom half of my airbox as member Scott suggested and let me tell you it works great. That cost me nothing but my time. You could check the sale board and see if anyone selling a K&N filter. I bought a spare for $25 from Bigworm which was virtually new. Good plugs and plug wires would also help your cause. Then there are the headers, larger MAS and TB. From there the sky's the limit or should I say your wallet.

My 91 will easily pull away from 4.3 blazers and S10 pickups. Bolt-ons can make a good improvement, but check your gear ratio for a real boost. Lower gears will make as much or more difference than all the bolt-ons togethor, due to the weight involved. I've done the KKM, BBK 66mm TB, Borla headers, Superchips module, Flowmaster cat-back, Splitfire plugs and wires, shift kit, gutted cat, and all synthetics in mine with good results. It's not a runner like my SHO, but it is fun to drive and can climb hills much easier Dead Link Removed.
