1999 XLT 4x4
New owner here in Miami - picked up a '99 XLT 4x4 with the 4.0 SOHC a week ago. It's in great shape and I've been busy changing fluids, filters, etc. I need HELP with Keyless and yes, I read the sticky thread. I'm also a decent mechanic.

I found the factory code thanks to this forum and had everything working great, everything being the keypad and one OEM remote that I got with the truck.

Now for the problem: I disconnected the battery to clean the cables and let the computer reset after cleaning the MAF sensor. After reconnected and going for a test run, I started to reprogram things. The radio stations and clock are fine. The keypad does not respond to the factory code and I can not get the RAP into programming mode using the 8-cycle approach per the manual. I have tried several times.

Does the RAP go into some kind of 100 mile wait mode after the battery is disconnected? Anybody? Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

The radio stations and clock are fine. The keypad does not respond to the factory code

Did you ever have the keypad working in the past? It may simply be a broken keypad since the factory code is a kind of "master key". Also, does the remote unlock key fob work correctly? If both the keypad and key fob do not work (assuming the key fob has a fresh battery) then the door unlock relay they activate could be bad.

I can not get the RAP into programming mode using the 8-cycle approach per the manual.

The anti-theft system switched from RAP to PATS in 1998 at some point. Since you have a 1999 it would help you to research your problems with "PATS" as a keyword.

Does the RAP go into some kind of 100 mile wait mode after the battery is disconnected?

No. I regularly disconnect and reconnect my battery and the RAP system immediately reactivates PATS is likely the same.

OK so I don't know if it's RAP or PATS. It has the white box inside the rear jack panel with the 5-digit code on it. Both the keypad and control were working fine before I disconnected the battery. I can't get either to respond now. Otherwise the truck starts and runs fine. What could disconnecting the battery have done?

Subscribe.

I have a 1996 XLT that has sat idle for extended periods of time, over the past five years. I would crank it several few months or so, but no real driving. Battery finally went dead, so I bought a new one this past Fall. However, I've never gotten the vehicle into "programming mode" to accept the key fob. And, obviously, the door keypad does not accept my personalized code. I've yet to get the code on the RAP module, but will in the next few weeks.

I tried disconnecting the battery again just for kicks. It didn't make any difference. I still can't get the RAP into programming mode or get a response from the keypad using the factory code. Could I have fried the RAP just by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery? It is sort of old but that would be some ridiculous bad luck...I see a new one for $88....

I don't know enough about the PATS system to help you. Perhaps someone who does will chime in.

the left rear quarter module is the security module, try unplugging it and plugging it back in, they had a tend icy to lock up.

I don't believe the PATS system (which is the passive security with special keys) has anything to do with the keyless entry (which is for the keypad and 3-button remotes). I could be wrong but that's what I believe based on my research so far.

I did try unplugging the two cable bundles going into the RAP module and reconnecting them but it didn't help. I plan to risk the $88 for a replacement module at this point. If it doesn't correct the problem then I'll be posting it in the classifieds.

mambo, where did you find the RAP module at that price?

I just ordered it from an eBay seller called ford parts depot. Search for part no. F87Z15604AA. It was $87 shipped and is new. I saw it on other sites from 90 to about 123. Stand by if you want and I'll sell it to you if it doesn't resolve my issue. I can't imagine what else it could be but we'll see soon enough...

I've yet to try the cable remove and reseat procedure, so I will not be getting one soon. I'll keep your offer in mind in the event I need one, and you do not. Thanks for the info.

I replaced the RAP module today and all is well. The new unit comes with a new code and card. The job took me about 45 minutes. Most of that is getting trim tabs out so that the interior panel can be pulled out enough to access the two screws. I didn't have to remove the rear seat belt to take the whole thing off. The keypad and both remotes are now programmed. My newly acquired explorer was not driven for a while and I suppose the shot of juice from reconnecting the battery did fry the old unit.

Odd. Thank you for updating us with the solution.

Wow; it must be Explorer RAP weekend. :-)

I finally got around to reading the factory code on mine.

Hint: use the lug wrench to leverage the interior panel outward, and you should be able to read the code.

However, when using the default code, the dome light does not come on when the first digit is pressed. Lights work fine when doors are opened/closed. I unplugged/plugged in the cables to the RAP, but that had no effect either. Unfortunately, I had no dielectric grease to add to the connections.

I cannot find a module for my vehicle available on eBay.

I cannot get the key remote programming mode to work either. I'm assuming that this all points back to the RAP module, which may have gone TU during the vehicle's (very) long period of sitting idle. Anyone got a suggestion on where to look for a RAP module? I wish I knew someone around here with a 1996, and see if a swap of units would work.

Well, based upon this previous thread, it appears that I need a new module.

The current module model number is F57F-15K602-AA. Couldn't find one at a decent price anywhere.

An alternative is YL1F-15K602-AA, however, using this will require me to buy new remote fobs.

You are mentioning several issues that could be caused by simpler things than the RAP module. Before buying a new one you should try to rule them out.

the dome light does not come on when the first digit is pressed. Lights work fine when doors are opened/closed.

So to clarify are you saying that the dome lights don't come on when the remote unlock is activated? But that these exact same dome lights do come on when the door is ajar?

I cannot get the key remote programming mode to work either.

I ordered a key fob off ebay once. Had dead batteries so I spent $6 on new ones. It worked for about a day before a parasitic drain within the key fob drained both 3V batteries down to 1.6V each. After that it stopped working. Some of those ebay fobs are just broken.

Correct. Lights come on when door is opened, and (I believe) should come on once I press the first correct digit of the door keypad ... but when pressing the keypad, nothing.

While I have ordered a key fob off of eBay, it is identical to my original one in every respect. And yes, both fobs now have new batteries. However, I've never been able to get either to work. The fob that came with the vehicle (now equipped with new battery) worked well for the longest time. However, due to the vehicle's extended period of sitting idle (five + years, with only an occasional start now and then), it no longer works.

Since the code on the RAP does not work, nor can I get the vehicle into "program mode" for the key fobs (door unlock acknowledgement), I'm guessing bad RAP module. But I am open to other suggestions.

i have a hard one to figure out. my explorer is a 97 so no pats, just a anti theft system that comes with every explorer 95-97. my alarm no longer arms and the theft light no longer works either unless i pull the harness out then the alarm goes off. if i leave the harness out then it will work fine but it still allows the remote to work when the truck is started. also im able to start my truck with out it plugged in. thats not normal. it seems like i have an electrical problem.... help?
