I got back into my X after a hike and started driving. Everything was normal, I got on the highway and noticed that the temp gauge was reading hotter than usual (pass the half way mark) and getting hotter. I pulled off and got into a parking lot and also noticed the the rpm's were running higher (normal is about 600) it was about 1100-1500. I shut the engine off for a while to cool down. When I started it back up the temp was down a little, but the rpm's were still high. I got back on the highway, the temp started to climb again, so I pulled off. Had to go home another route, at a much lower miles per hour. What happen? What's the problem?

Thanks,

The higher RPM's are part of the vehicles ECM programing. It has a program that will bump the engine's RPM's up when the coolant tempature reaches a set degree. This is to increase the rate of coolant flow to assist in bringing the engine tempature under control.

From your description it sounds like you have a coolant flow problem. The most common cause is a plugged radiator.

Thanks, I guess I will find out for sure Monday.

don't rule out a failing thermostat either.

I hope it is only a thermostat.

Well it turned out to be a sensor.
