As im sure so many of us have gone through I have a problem with my automatic hubs. It seems that after being ingaged in 4x4 that in will knock and clunk if the wheels turn sharp or if there is a lot of suspention travel. Then when I go in reverse to disingage it and drive away it grinds with the movement of the wheels and at a certain point will knock and clunk untill it is disingaged. Also, the other day I backed up in my drive way a little fast and there is a bump at the end. When I went over this something partially ingaged and the grinding noise started then when I drove away to stop it the clunking noise again. It sounds like it is in the drivers side. How hard is it to get an automatic hub from a junkyard and install it and are the driver and passenger sides the same. Finally, What year hubs work for a 92 ex. I was told ranger, bronco, and explorer
are all the same but what years I have no idea. any help would be greatly appriciated the snow is falling and my 4x4 is messing up. Thank a bunch

Ok here is the best mod you could do to your truck at this point. Get a set of warn hubs for $150 give or take a little. Then order the Ford Manual Hub Bearing adjustment nuts (Ford Part# D2TZ1198A, $18.60 list price).

From there pull out the Haynes/Chilton manual. It will tell you exactly how to remove the auto and install the manual hub systems. If you have any questions reguarding this conversion you can e-mail or post a response.

As for replaceing the auto hubs. New autos cost around $300 I think from www.FordPartsNetwork.com and the ones from the junk yard are probly in the same shape as yours.

Remember this isonly a suguestion, but this the route I took when my autos craped out on me. I dont mind getting out of the truck to lock the hubs cause I know they are locked at that point.

I'm sure most (if not all) Members will agree with Felix. Manual hubs are very strong and make Autohubs look like they belong on a kid's toy. Additionally the manual hubs are way cheaper. IMO it isn't worth the extra $$ for autohubs. Manual link install
