I posted in another section and have got no responses, so i decided to ask here. I have a 1973 Jeep J4800 and the steering knuckle (pass side) broke off at the tie rod end. Where can I find one that works for that truck? It has drum brakes on the front. So far I have been stumped on finding one for this specific year and model. What other vehicles would use the same knuckle on a D44 axle? Also where is a good place to get one from?

After some research I now know I have a Dana HD 44 w/full floating axle and closed knuckle, also it has drum brakes and 8 bolt pattern.
Do your parts match that description?
on a side note I have an axle from a 74 j-20 coming in the summer for an axle swap, so I can get disc brakes up front. From what the guy told me this is an open knuckle design.

You have the older style axle. I'd upgrade to the later model J20 setup if I were you. They are stronger and parts are available. In your case, that likely means swapping out the entire axle. They are still full floating and 8 lug, and the disk brakes are a big plus.

I don't know who would have the closed knuckle style parts. I've never seen any of those in the yards I frequent.

I got a line on a set from a guy in Idaho the other day, they are VERY rare. I have been hitting up message boards and mud boggers for almost three weeks. Like I said 1 guy has the part but I do have another axle on the way. If I had a 74 parts are all over the place

It's been crazy trying to get this fixed. But really winter is almost done and I won't need the 4x4 till next winter.
