I recently purchased a 99 ford ranger for a buck... Yes 1 dollar. My buddy blew up the motor. So I pulled a motor out of a 05 Sable 3.0 and threw it in. Then somehow I blew my rear main seal "Which I had replaced before install of motor. but it broke the spring on the back side and started pouring..." and had to pull the trans. I fixed the seal but the trans slipped off the floor jack while on the trans adapter "don't ask how.." and the torque converter fell off, it was all the way down "lowest setting on the jack" and i caught the trans and converter fell on my leg. (so nothing was harmed) but the input shaft slid out of the trans with the converter. I went to put the shaft back, and the torque converter in but the shaft wouldn't go all the way back in the trans acts like a snap ring is locking it in place...
So Unfortunately I couldn't put it back... But the 700 miles I drove it it slipped/snatched from 2nd to 3rd, and it went into OD, But you couldn't feel it shift into OD. and felt like the truck had no go. like the motor was there but couldn't use the torque. So instead of just throwing it back into the truck I figured I would rebuild it. I'm a Master Diesel Technician so how hard could it be to do a trans right...LOL
Also before I installed the motor I drained the torque converter and trans, lines and cooler.also flushed out the cooler. And it looked like, very spent motor oil, So I'm Assuming clutches were shot. But hey it was a $1.00.
I bought the ASTG on my 4r44e. and I have an account at
http://www.transtarindustries.com/
So i can get all my parts, but I need to know what all I need to order for a full rebuild, What wears out and what can be reused. They sell a deluxe kit, which has the gaskets, clutches w/steels and can get the bands separate..
Any advice would be gracious.
