I recently purchased a 99 ford ranger for a buck... Yes 1 dollar. My buddy blew up the motor. So I pulled a motor out of a 05 Sable 3.0 and threw it in. Then somehow I blew my rear main seal "Which I had replaced before install of motor. but it broke the spring on the back side and started pouring..." and had to pull the trans. I fixed the seal but the trans slipped off the floor jack while on the trans adapter "don't ask how.." and the torque converter fell off, it was all the way down "lowest setting on the jack" and i caught the trans and converter fell on my leg. (so nothing was harmed) but the input shaft slid out of the trans with the converter. I went to put the shaft back, and the torque converter in but the shaft wouldn't go all the way back in the trans acts like a snap ring is locking it in place...

So Unfortunately I couldn't put it back... But the 700 miles I drove it it slipped/snatched from 2nd to 3rd, and it went into OD, But you couldn't feel it shift into OD. and felt like the truck had no go. like the motor was there but couldn't use the torque. So instead of just throwing it back into the truck I figured I would rebuild it. I'm a Master Diesel Technician so how hard could it be to do a trans right...LOL

Also before I installed the motor I drained the torque converter and trans, lines and cooler.also flushed out the cooler. And it looked like, very spent motor oil, So I'm Assuming clutches were shot. But hey it was a $1.00.

I bought the ASTG on my 4r44e. and I have an account at

http://www.transtarindustries.com/

So i can get all my parts, but I need to know what all I need to order for a full rebuild, What wears out and what can be reused. They sell a deluxe kit, which has the gaskets, clutches w/steels and can get the bands separate..

Any advice would be gracious.

Welcome to this forum! There are different levels of rebuild kits such as gaskets, seals, clutch plates, steel plates, bushings, filter, etc. Do you want to replace everything or wait until you open it up to see what you actually need?

I'm more or less trying to buy what I know Ill need, The soft parts, and wanted to know if anyone knew what always gets replaced, and what commonly goes in a full rebuild. But yes I going to take it apart and see what i need. I'm pretty sure that somethings is messed up at the input shaft, But it also had a pressure issue or a solenoid issue when shifting, I also bought a new torque converter, just in case the veins were clogged or something. the truck had 201,000 with probably no filter change :( So anything could be the cause of the trans problems while driving. But the body is mint and now it had a new engine, and all new brakes, suspension, etc.... So I feel that rebuilding the trans to 100% is only right. Why half way build it, if your inside the trans might as well fix it right.

That and I refuse to pay someone to fix anything that is mechanical. It was built by man, thus it can be fixed by any man...

But considering your the only one that is answering this thread I'll probably just break down the trans and just figure it out. Cant be any harder than rebuilding a 8,500 lbs N14 Cummings diesel engine in a Rig... LOL

Take it easy, By the way nice forum here enjoyed all the interesting topics. Lots of potential, and experience.

You should flush out the front cooler with cooler cleaner before you install the transmission after it's rebuilt. Sometimes you will need to buy hard parts like drums, sprags, thrust washers, torrington bearings, etc, so it's hard to determine everything before it's opened.
