I realize that this isn't a Chevrolet forum, but I haven't been able to get any help from a Chevrolet forum. I'm hoping that you guys can help me.

My gf has a 94 Corsica. Really it is most notable at a redlight. The motor shakes violently, shakes the whole vehicle. If you put it into park or neutral the rough idle disappears. I noticed when I was following behind her that the exhaust smelled pretty raunchy. Maybe this has something to do with the catalytic converter? Not sure.

I am unable to pull any codes because apparently GM decided that they would try to integrate both OBD1 and OBD2 together into one data link. Needless to say, a professional is supposed to read the codes.

After this started I changed the fuel filter, the air filter, and the spark plugs.

Please let me know if you guys have any ideas.

Given the rough idle and exhaust smell I would:

Clean the MAF (mass air flow sensor) if it has one

Check for and repair any vacuum leaks

If this car has a distributor cap and condenser check and replace if necessary

Verify the engine timing, adjust if necessary and possible

Check the O2 sensor(s) function

Determine if the catalytic converter is clogged

Check the motor mounts. They could be loose resulting in a vibration at idle

Good luck

Thanks for the information, Joe.
I forgot to mention also. It seems like the vehicle shifts harder into second gear. I'm not sure if this has something to do with the idle problem or not.

The motor is a V6 3.1 for anyone that may have any experience with it.

If it has an automatic transmission that may be an indicator of poor vacuum, again check the vacuum level. Repair any vacuum leaks if any
