Does anyone know how to remove the plastic steps on the Nerf bars. I got some rust I would like to clean up and repaint.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is your 97 is like my 99. The bottom of the bars are open. I'd imagine if you looked up under them you'll find bolts or some such holding the steps on. Might be glued in place but I doubt it.

That open on the bottom design I think was a mistake. Road salt and other crude gets up in there and washing the vehicle doesn't generally get it out. I made a point of flushing them out with a hose from underneath but they still rusted. Mine sure have and I too need to remove the bars to clean them up and get them repainted.

Oh I've got the Nerf Bars off the explorer, and the ends removed. Its completely disassembled except for the plastic step piece on top of the nerf tube. The version I have is a hollow oval shape with no openings on the bottom to get to any tabs of any sort to detach the plastic step piece.

Hmmm, that sounds completely different than my 99. Sorry I can't help.
