Yesterday I went to start my truck and the battery was dead. No amount of charging or boosting would give enough juice to start the truck. My battery was completely flat and in the process it destroyed my existing 90A alt. Today I installed a new Magnacharge 1100 CCA battery and a new 130A alternator. The 130A alt bolts up directly in place of the 90A and all the wiring is the same!!!! :bounce::bounce::bounce: I had been wondering if it would work but didn't want to buy an alternator if I didn't need to. I guess this was a blessing in disguise! :D:D:D

Is it a rebuild?

Paul; is a rebuild and how much and where from? I noticed my bearings are starting to make noise (110K). What is the stock rated at (90?)? Is this all years? I have a 93. I tried a Search with no results.
Thanks

when i bought my explorer in november, i replaced the alternator. the replacement wasn't charging as well as i expected, so i exchanged it. then that alternator fell apart when i accelerated. luckily the next one worked fine and is still charging perfectly. if i had to do that again, i would go postal in the auto parts storeDead Link Removed Dead Link Removed

I believe that my '97 SOHC comes with the 130amp alternator as stock. Anyone know if there is a way I can check it out and see what it is rated at?

For the early models the 90 amp version is the most common. I know that the 130 amp alt was used on some 4.0L Rangers and also on police Explorers. Not sure about newer Explorers though. Other than that all I can say is that it bolts up directly and plugs in using the same wiring harness. No reason not to upgrade if you need a new one anyway.

Paul, did you get the new alt from Ford or where? How much?

Rocky, mine recently started making bearing rumble noises, too. 130,000 miles.

I got it from a local parts store.

If you buy one don't tell them that you are changing from a 90A to 130A or they may not take your core(or will only give back half of the core charge). Just ask for the 130A alt and then quietly hand them back the 90A alt without saying anything. They won't look at it close enough to realise until it is to late.

Thanks Paul

What did you pay for the Alternator? Also, have you looked any further into the 44 front hub conversion?

Well, it looks like '97's came with a 95amp alternator, and the 130's were options for cop trucks.

I like the "return for core" concept. Hmmmm.....
