2014 Explorer Limited
I just took delivery of a new 2014 Ford Explorer Limited edition and of course the dealer wanted to sell me. I had a few questions on these for the experts:

1. Rust proofing - I presume there is something to keep this thing from rotting out over the next 10 years?

2. Underbody coating - apparently this is not done anymore due to people outside of 'rust belt' states not needing this. I live in the DC area so we get an avg amount of winter activity year to year.

3. 7yr/100k Extended warranty - how are these things holding up?

Skip the first two.

Before you agree to buy the dealers "Offer" of extended warranty (ESP) carefully read the threads on this forum regarding other online dealers selling the same warranty for much less.

Many members here with good factual information.

I agree with Sgt1411.

Definitely check out some of the online prices for the Ford ESP warranty, even if only to print out what you can get the warranty for online and show to your dealer to get them to come down in price.

Thanks for the info guys.

Ive done the online checking and here is what the dealer offered which is not bad.

1. The vehicle actually comes with a 'lifetime powertrain' warranty
2. They offered a 8yr/100k $100 deductable Ford warranty covering everything but the powertrain due to #1 for ~$1300

Price wise that doesnt seem bad - however I will hit 100k miles in year 6 or 7 most likely and feel pretty good the things outside of the powertrain should last that long!

Thoughts?

I got a 6yr/100,000 $50 deductible for $1130. Priced online dealer matched it.

On our deal, I showed the salesman the R.I dealer with the 7/125 Ford ESP and the dealer matched it. But I had to hear him bellow that each region has set pricing. Regardless he matched it and I was happy. Thank goodness for iPhone's.

You can purchase it online as well. Never heard the "region pricing" excuse. Online they didnt ask where I was when I got the quote, so I aint buying the "region pricing" excuse.

Exactly. My husband's F150 ESP was ordered online and then I confirmed with my local dealership and all is good. Online or in person- just get the best price-that's my motto. I was happy when they matched the price, since I told the salesman to match or do better otherwise I will order online.

You will hear all sorts of excuses and whining. That's why my kids never come with. LOL

How did you get a lifetime power train warranty? This is not something Ford offers as far as I know. Make sure whatever warranty you get is in fact the Ford Extended Service Plan (ESP). There are different levels of coverage and the best is the Premium Care.

Unlike what you may have been used to on your previous GM vehicle (how did I know?!) the Ford extended warranty starts on the day of the in service and the miles at in service. No sense waiting to buy before the first 12 months or 12000 miles are just about up like on the GM vehicles.

Buying now will provide car rental if you choose that option, including first day rental and upgraded rental as other options. I went with first day, upgrade rental, zero deductible.

I bought on line from an out of state dealer and didn't have to pay sales tax and got a great price. My selling dealer didn't even offer the Ford plan because they make more money selling their branded aftermarket policy.

Oh, and welcome to the Ford family. I vowed off GM completely after over 45 years and have a 2013 Edge.

Certain dealers offer this as a 'free' incentive. My dealer, Beach Ford, in Virginia Beach gave it to me when I ordered.

Did we cross path's on the Enclave forum? :)

Its not a Ford ESP plan so thats why Im still considered an official one from Ford.

Also - Im trying to sell my GM Points and use that to pay for the ESP plan. Buying the Explorer cleaned out any additional funds I have at the moment :O.

I have heard of other "free" lifetime power train warranties, but like this one they were not factory warranties of any sort. They were all aftermarket or dealership sponsored warranties. The biggest downside I have read about was 1) many of the dealerships required you to have your maintenance done by them only or 2) it was only good at their dealership. If you moved out of the area, or didn't have them service it, you lost the benefits provided. Not sure how yours or the other one mentioned by 182RG is written up.

Yes, we ran across each other on the Enclave/Traverse/Acadia/Outlook boards. My wife had a 2010 Traverse LTZ for a couple of years. I still stop over there and happened to see your post about your new purchase.

I have belonged to this forum when I was looking to replace my F150 and thought for sure I would get an Explorer. I ended up with the Edge instead.

You can always purchase the Ford ESP anytime within the bumper to bumper factory warranty period. The price does increase each year, but not outrageously.
