Penetration is the fusion line below the surface. You can plainly see it on the right hand side of my RA. If you could cut that rod in half that blue circular line would run the whole length of the rod. The more current the more the fusion line goes deeper. Also you can alter the fusion line using the same current by holding the tip your welder closer or further from work. After awhile you wil get the feel of it. If you get a chance to use different welders like stick or mig just start welding and practicing. You can see the fusion line and if you can't just cut the metal and see for yourself experimenting with current, wire dia, stick size and so on.
Just added, In fact I need get away from this screen, put down the half eaten bag of chips and go outside and do some fusion on my B11 seeya.
