Well, they don't make a traditional V8 4x4 in those years. They came in either 2wd or AWD. I have a 1998 AWD and love it. I too had bad luck with the V6 tranny. The V8 has been good to me so far. The only common problem I know of that it doesn't share with the V6 models id the passanger side exhaust manifold often develops a leak, and occasionally cracks. It will cause a ticking sound upon acceleration, and is easy to detct.

I got a 2000 AWD with 26k and here are the problems I've had thus far:

- bad IAC
- 2x bad ABS sensors
- transmission cooler hose connection to radiator
- bad rear wiper motor
- bad rotors and pads
- sort of bad shocks (replaced them anyway)
- bad belt and tensioner
- SUCKY GAS MILEAGE!!!!

Heed the last one. I'm lucky if I get 10 MPG. Typically I'll get about 200 miles to the tank city and about 250 highway.

Other than that I bought this one because many people had commented on the engine and transmission being bullet proof. Knock, knock, but I have not had any significant problems with those. If you like Explorers you'll like the truck. It has nice power and the ride is ok (not great but after my new shocks it is tolerable). Mine will be my last American car as I've had much better luck with Japanese.

I have a 2000 Sport with 50k on the clock.
I have had to replace one IAC, and the rear wiper motor.
I have had zero problems otherwise ( other than a pending MAS issue but it is aftermarket )
I get 270 to 275 to a tank of gas and my right foot stays pretty active if you know what I mean :)
Very happy with this truck. Easy to work on and maintain.
Don't know if I will buy another one or not. I am not opposed to another so that speaks well.

A gentleman here has successfully converted an AWD 5.0 to a 4x4, so it has low range. Something to consider if low range with a V8 is important to you.

You really shoul be getting more than 10mpg. I average over 16mpg with mixed highway/city, with harder than average driving. On the highway I get at least 325 to a tank.
