Hi, I'm 17 years old from Maryland(18 in April) and I'm saving up to get a 2nd generation Explorer off of Craiglist hopefully. And I plan to do as many easy mods as I can to it to personalize it and get better gas mileage out of it, Probably starting with a cold air intake or exhaust system.

I also want to learn to drive on it. Unfortunately I'm not up to par with my peers with the license crap because I procrastinated and the laws extended so you have to hold a learner's permit for 9 months in Maryland, I have my learner's permit as of October but no hours and haven't taken driver's ed yet but I know what I want.

Welcome aboard. Had many friends in Bowie when I lived in College Park MD.
Glad at your age that your talking about mods to your upcoming project. That determination will flow over into other aspects of your life.
Also if it's in your budget...get a Mig.

Yeah, i've been wanting to do this kind of stuff since I was 13 but nobody ever gave me the chance to dabble in it. The closest I've gotten to upgrading car stuff is when I replaced the spark plug on my lawnmower a few weeks ago. Computers on the other hand, i've already mastered. Built 2 of them myself

What is a Mig btw? I'm kind of a noob still.

You sound like my son with the computers, wish I knew more about them. There were none when I first started, what I call Hot Rodding. Just had to wait for the next issue of Hot Rod or some other gearhead magazine each month to find out anything. Your so lucky to have the vast amount of info at your finger tips.

Us old farts have to pass on what we've learned after so many many mistakes. I helped my son and bought him his first car when he graduated from High School. Taught him the best I could about turning wrenches, now he's a Master Certified Honda Tech. He's light years now ahead of me when it comes to these newer and must admit, better engines.
Just ask away if you need help, there are guys here that are also light years ahead of me in their knowledge and thats the reason I'm still asking at my age.

Welcome To The Forum! Good luck with the license and getting an explorer! Once you start modding it can become an incurable addiction.
