- 98 Mountaineer 4.0
Hi Guys (and Gals),
I have been going through the site for the last couple of months. Lots of good info and supportive members. It is refreshing to see.
I have acquired a 1998 Mercury Mountaineer 2wd, 4.0 sohc. It was originally purchased by a little old lady who used it for groceries and church services (no lie). My dad found it a few years ago at a clients dealership while he was searching for a better vehicle for his camping/mountaineering/kayaking stuff. Price was right and he only needed it for a year or so.
He bought it at 50k miles, all of the fluids were flushed, and an a/c repair was needed. Now at 108k miles, he has finally found a better vehicle for his purpose. 2wd on fire roads in the winter was starting to become nerve wracking for him. The current dealer was not going to give him anything whatsoever for a trade in, so I offered to give it a shake down and buy it from him.
Overall, the truck is pretty nice, white with the grey/pewter trim, no body damage, no rust. Grey interior, all cloth. Starts up quickly and shifts very smoothly. It is a base model, I even have a cassette deck. There are some minor issues to address, but they will happen as time and cash permit. I am keeping the timing chains and the weak transmission in the back of my mind, but the oil has been religiously changed and the tranny fluid looks almost new.
Oh, my name is Ken, by the way. My main transportation is a motorcycle, a Yamaha FZ6, hence the member name of Kenfz6. The bike is a little 600cc front faired bike, and is set up primarily as a day tripper with slightly lowered gearing, saddlebags and a few comfort doo dads. The mountaineer is a nice addition, the bike is all I have used for the last 5 or 6 years. Winters have gotten (feeling) colder, and I have gotten a bit more leery of ice in the road.
While this is just a part time vehicle, I have already learned a lot from the forums. I have a tendency to lurk, especially when there are so many more qualified than I. I promise not to knowingly pass bad information, use run on paragraphs and to search as much as I can before posting a problem (hee hee). Elite membership is in the works.
Thanks everyone,
Ken
