Hello, and thanks in advance for any help. I hate joining a form to ask a question that seems stupid and makes everyone want to shout just Google it. But I’ve been searching for at least six hours today and can’t find it on the Internet anywhere. Does anybody know how to decode the engine casting number on a 4.0 SOHC. There is one number on the side of the cylinder head that says 97JM-6050-cf
and one very small on the back of the motor by the fire wheel that says XZA23838
My son bought a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer from a guy who had pulled the engine and claimed he had another engine, the 4.0 SOHC that he got from a 2005 explorer. But a lot of other things haven’t checked out, So I would feel better if I could actually figure out the build date of this mystery motor and what it possibly might’ve come out of. I’m really not sure what year of 4.0 SOHC engine would be interchangeable and this Mountaineer.
