99 Explorer XLT AWD 4.0
Hey there.
I just recently (like 2 weeks ago) bought a 99 XLT Explorer AWD 4.0 that only had a whopping 93500 miles on it. Thought I had a steal.
But the last couple of days there has been a noticeable slip at the 2-3 gear shift, and occasionally (like 3 times now) the "O/D OFF" light will start to flash if I take off hard or if I come out of a turn and accelerate good.
If I keep the rpm at or below 2k until it shifts to 3rd it's fine. No noticeable slip.

I have read that it could be the shift selonoids or the speed sensor. Any help would be a big thanks.

As being a Ford lifer, I know the Explorers have had a history of "bad" trannys.

Is there life in this one? I would hate to send this perfectly great shape truck to the scrapper.

Ok i had the same problem don't waste your time doing filters or anything i did the selonoid didnt do anything so i looked at my wires and found that some were touching each other and that fixed my problem butsounds like your trannys done for sorry man

Relax gents. Use the search tool and look up "shift flare" and "valve body rebuild" and you'll get the info you need.

If you're patient, modestly handy with a few tools, and take the time to read through these forums and collect the experience these folks share here, you can handle this one.

And welcome aboard.
