1993 Explorer XLT 5 speed
Greetings to all,
I just picked up a 1993 Ford Explorer 5 speed. 106k miles, cloth interior (mint), new clutch, new shocks, new brakes. The negative is that it has been sitting for four years. It belonged to the wife of a friend who used it to transport her daughter and their 100lb German shepard around town. Well, she says the rear end "started going bad" so they just parked it in their back yard and bought a new one. Must be nice. Anyway, it's just been growing moss since I've known him, and being pretty good with a wrench I threw her an offer of $300.00 the other day. She took it. He was glad just to get the thing out of the yard.
Well, Saturday I registered it and had AAA come and bring it home. The boy and I spent the afternoon delousing the thing. The battery was a gonner so I bought a new one. Pulled the plugs, squirted some oil in the cylinders, and gave it a little push while in gear. Everything goes round and round. The hitch so far is that when I turn the key to start it, I hear a click, but no action. I pulled the starter and had it tested. It worked once at the Autozone, but also popped their tester's fuse two other times. I'm not convinced it is good. I put it back in after the test and get the same results.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and the "rear end problem"? I think it's the parking brake. The pedal is really stiff, and when you only push it down halfway, then release the brake, the brake still drags. Once you really jam it to the floor, then release it, it's fine. I guess we'll see once we get it running.

I'll post some pictures as soon as I can.
Thanks!

Think I found it!

I was doing some test with a VOM and found that the +12vdc was not getting to the secondary terminal of the fender relay. I checked the coil lead and saw that it was getting voltage when I turned the key. So, I took a screwdriver and shorted the two posts of the relay (while the key was on) and it started right up! Runs great!
