Hello all my names Chris. I been a fan of explorers for a while now and I love the new look of the 02+. Im looking to get a 4x4. I found a nice deal on a 2002 Sport 4x4 for $8K with 86K miles. After reading thru these forums a bit I noticed 2002 has alot of problems. Im really scared to get one now. This sport is real nice has TV and DVD and looks real clean. Should I bite the bullet and buy it? Im not rich so I cant buy it and spend a thousand fixing potential problems.

I also found a 2003 Explorer XLS 4x4 black with color and cloth seats. Real nice looking also with 74K miles for $9900. I prefer a sport but really it doesnt matter. Black is my favorite color and I love this one. Should I spend the extra 2k and get the 03 go go with cheaper with the 02 sport? Im confused and cant decide. The explorer will be my daily driver and will see offroad use every now and then but nothing extreme and no hot dogging in the mud. Thanks everyone for info.

Welcome to the site:chug:

The 2002 Sport (2 door) is a 2nd generation Explorer. That platform uses independent front and a solid rear axle.

The 2002 4 door is the 3rd generation Explorer. It has independent front and rear suspension.

The 2002 4 door may have some issues being a first year release.

The 2002 Sport is a time proven platform and should have a long life ahead of it's 86k.

Just my .02;)

Hey Rick thanks for the help. So the 02 Sport is like a older gen traped in a newer gen. body??:D I set it up with the dealer to test drive the 02 Sport tommorrow afternoon after I get off work. One thing I dont like about the sports they are extremely prone to flipping. My friend had I believe a 98 or 99 sport. I was behind him going down the road. He swerved to miss a deer and dang near fliped it going around 40mph. But he still hit the deer. Deffently will have to take it easy.
