Both the hood support struts on my 99 Sport have quit working. Can some please provide info on getting this fixed. IS this something I can do myself or should I take it to a shop? How much can I expect to pay for this job - labor and parts. I'm going overseas later this month and the wife will be driving the Sport while I'm gone. Any and all suggestions welcome. Thanks, Mike

Pepboys has tons of struts in stock, just pop off the retainer clips with a screwdriver, pop the struts off, snap the clips back in place,5 mins max job.
Have someone hold the hood up when you do it:)

The OEM ford struts are crap, thats why they only last a few years, made by the same company that makes OEM ford shocks no dought.
Think about it, how much action do they see.

After replacing my struts two times and then having my hood again come crashing down on my allready screwed-up neck....this is how I fixed it. I must warn you this is not for the faint hearted.

The cost of the rod $1.00 Junk yard
Labor Free I did it myself
Not ever again having it smash me Priceless

Great Idea rookie:)

Thanks Guys - I'm off to Pep Boys this morning.

call first - when i called for tailgate struts - they had none and said they didn't carry them. Carquest had some, as did autozone

I went to Advance Auto parts and bought the replacement hood struts. Paid $41.00 for the pair and they carry a lifetime replacement warranty. Wanted to thank those who provided suggestions.

My OEM hood struts are working fine at 152k. :p

I recently bought a '00 Ex. The first time I opened up the heavy hood to inspect the engine compartment, the wind kicked up and I narrowly missed getting decapitated! Now I don't trust hood lift struts at all -OEM or other and I hate working under the hood with one eye out for a sneaky blow from my own hood!

As cheap temp insurance against a slam in the head, I took about 2 ft. of common 3/8" copper pipe, wrapped both ends with electrical tape (to spare the paintjob) and located the two ends in the factory 1" round cut-outs on the compartment frame and the hood. With my bar jammed in there, I feel more at ease about sticking my neck out. Longer term I may replace the struts, but will probably go the route similar to Rookie. I wonder how many Explorer owners have gotten whacked over the years? sooo.... When under the hood, Beware the Guillotine!
