New In-Dash CD Installation

Okay. I've looked over several of the posts from the last week, but unfortunately, none of them point to an answer to my question. Is the installation of a new In-Dash CD the big pain that I've read about? I've had responses in the past regarding problems with the physical installation of the head and problems connecting the new head with the factory amp. (BTW. I have a 91 XLT w/ InDash Tape w/ Toggle Volume and Sub) On top of that, many of the online companies I might go with for purchase list the Exp. as a problem installation.

If anyone has suggestions or thoughts on the topic, let me know.

Very easy

I found it to be very easy! The hardest part is finding the deck you want. Once you have the deck I would go to a pro audio store to get the wireing harness. the wireing harness comes with two harnesses. Now you first have to take out the sliding ash tray. I belive it's only two hex screws. The with a screw driver pop out the 4x4 buttons and unplug them from the back. Now at this point the front of the dash that is around the radio will pop off pretty easy. It will pop the from from around the steering wheel and the climate controls. Once you get that off you will need the keys for the factory radio to get that out. I think you can buy those for $10 but some pro audio will just take it out for you at that point if you take it to thier store. takes a min or so. the keys look like a big "u" with little ball at the end. The description on that is a bit weird but once you see them you will know what I am talking about. now that the stock radio is out you unplug the wire harnnes from the radio and plug in the harness that you bought. This wire harness then wires up to the wires the will come out of the back of the radio. At that point it's just matching the colors with the directions provided by the manufacture of the harness. Next you want to get the sleeve for the radio positioned in the dash. Once that is in slide in the radio. Now you want to go the the back of the Explorer and pop out the storage bin. This is where the stock amp is placed. The second wire harness goes into the amp. this will take the amp out of the circuit. The sock radio does not have power. It just sends a signal to the amp. you will want to make sure you put the wire harnnes on the amp. Your new deck will have power with it and if you don't put in the harness for the amp you are going to blow the speakers. Once that harness is in go ahead and make sure the radio works! If it works you then can put the storage bin and dash back together and in the oposite order you took them off. The hard part about the amp harness is that it is a tight space and if you have big hands you may have a problem getting the harness on. I had to have my kid do it for me.
