If you change your gearing to be in the optimal powerband your mileage will improve somewhat. However, large heavy tires and an increased wind resistance are your enemies.

yeah my mileage sucks now to but i just live with it since i dont drive to far. id check into regearing like alec said it will also increase your performance. do you know what gear ratio your running now?

You could always try the intake, exhaust, performance plugs and wires, and the chip.

im pretty sure my gearing is 3.73, and do they make chips for my 91 explorer XL, havent seen any around but i could be wrong. i already have exhaust and im ordering plugs + wires soon

I got abot 15% better mileage since I modified my airbox on my 91.Also I find running premium works out cheaper.

i lost about 3 mpg when i went from 30s to 32s, with 3.27 gears and a 5-speed. with a KKM intake, splitfire wires, and bumping up the PSI i got back between 1 and 1.5 of those, but i am still kinda slow.

truckperformance.com is where I ordered my wires from. It was cheaper to order custom JBL 9mm high performance wires than to just go to Advance Auto and buy them out right. I believe that is also where I found the chip. Also look at www.kustomz.com for the chip and intake.

Do you have stock gears or have they been changed? Stock is 3.2 something. When I went to 35"s, my ex wouldn't get out of it's own way. Does a lot better now with 4.10, but I should've went with 4.56

stock gears on 1st gen can be 3.08, 3.27, 3.55, or 3.73

JBA's is what I meant. Sorry about that. I have the JBA blue 9mm. When I got mine, they were on sale for $40

....on first gen? i have heard of it on second gen, but 3.73LS was the highest option offered at the dealer to my knowledge.

http://www.therangerstation.com/Axles.html

Look at the chart at the very bottom of the page.

"Explorer
Navajo 1990-1994 Width is 1.5" wider than 93+ Ranger, 3" wider than pre-93, 31 spline
Spring perches must be fabricated and welded on top
Stock spring perches can be used to lower the truck (like a flip kit)
Shock mounts must be fabricated and welded on
Very common to find ltd. Slip, usually 3.73 or 4.10 (4x4) gears ":)

Also:
http://www.car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi
This is an option list for a used rear axle from a 94 Explorer from car-part.com

i'm still not a believer. that search yielded nothing and the rangerstation may not be 100% accurate (then again it is possible that i am wrong)...i just never heard of 4.10s being stock in a 1st gen.

IF, by slim chance he did have 4.10s they would be more than fine for 32s or 33s
