new lugnuts

The lugnuts on my 2002 XLT v8 are starting to get a bit rounded off. I have noticed lately that the 19mm socket is getting stuck on some of the nuts so I think it's time to replace them. I will probably do both back wheels.

Advance Auto has a whole lot of nuts listed for my 2002, so I have no idea what to get.

Can someone fill me in on which parts are closest to OE and what the potential upgrades are. RockAuto, etc, have long lists as well so once I figure out what I am looking for I will check prices and such.

The ones I have now look like what they call "Acorn", would that be right?

You will want ½-20 acorn lug nuts. If you have a wheel with a hub cap, make sure to get nuts that will accommodate the cap clipping on to them. If the nuts are exposed, go for the ones you like the looks of best. You would be best off trying to stick with ¾" hex nuts so that the factory tire iron can be used in an emergency. I have had good luck getting them off of eBay, usually $15-20 for a set.

At the moment I use a 4-way lug wrench that is always in the back of my truck. I use the 19mm-3/4" part of the wrench, but it has always been a little loose. I use a 19mm socket with my clicker to torque the nuts down.

I guess I always assumed that they lug nuts were 19mm metric since the rest of the truck seems to use metric nuts and bolts. Is that not the case, are the lug nuts standard?

The only place I can find half way decent 1/2x20 - 3/4 acorn nuts is Discount Tire (American Tire in Ca)...

I've picked up 3 sets for our X over all the years and every time I try to get them from Ebay they are too short (bottom out before they hold the tire on). The ones from Discount Tire always work.

I "think" it was $2-$2.50 each.. I can't remember... I have a specific guy I use and he gets me good prices . He will match online prices, including amazon.com prices, even on tires so I'm not positive how much they cost..

These appear to be what is on my truck right now,

They are open end so there should be no issue with them bottoming out. I think these are 0.98c at RockAuto. I have the little Ford hubcaps over the nuts, so is there any reason to go with acorn lugnuts?

This is one of the sites I asked about in another thread. There appear to be dozens of sites like this selling "Ford replacement parts". There are many different domain names, but the site looks to be the same more or less with a few changes. I have yet to get any feedback on the reliability of these sites. Consumer reports is filled with horror stories for some of the sites. Basically parts never shipped and no refunds. Orders canceled because the part is discontinued, again no refunds. Damaged parts returned with no acknowledgement of the return, and no refund, etc. It's always hard to know what any of this means, but suffice it to say that I never do business with a web site that doesn't come recommended to me. This site wants $10 shipping for a $8 order which is never a good sign. The most it should cost to ship a product like this is $5.95 for a usps flat rate box.

Have you done business with this site and had a good experience? These different sites just look like the parts departments of local dealerships, which would explain why they have the same engine under the hood. If that's the case, it is even more important to find one with a good track record and recommendations.

Only once, but found the service and pricing excellent compared to Fordparts.com at 100% MSRP. Ordered a body mount for $135 compared to $223. Auto Nation Ford Parts White Bear Lake was formerly Tousley Ford which is quite reputable. They also shipped here which most don't. GL

Researching a little more looks like one of those times you should buy at your local dealer. They are listed at $5 each and should be Comparable or identical to your OEM lug nuts. BTW, use a SIX point socket whenever possible, especially on high torque fasteners.

Best lug nuts to get are McGard. They are the most durable and wont rust after a year and wont have to worry about the stainless cap coming off. They also hold up to impact guns. And if I also think they are still made in the US.

Where is the best place to get them? Do you have a part number in mind? I like the open end variety because you don't have to worry about the depth.

I have looked at these a bit and they always seem to come in packs of 4. Why would you do that? Almost every tire I have ever looked at has 5 or 6 lugnuts. That seems like a blatant way of making you buy more product than you need. Why not sell them in packs of 5 or individually? I guess if you were getting chrome acorn nuts you would be putting them on all of your tires at the same time and so would get 5 packs, but it would be helpful to have a bit more variety available.
