1st, let me say Hello & that I am glad to be a brand new member of your Explorerforum family. If it's ok with all, I am going to come in swinging with my 1st post.

04 Explorer XLT timing chain broke. Mech says that I need new engine, citing chain debri has scattered throughout, causing too much damage to not replace. Does this sound reasonable? Just found this out today and now currently awaiting $ quote on replacement engine + labor.

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome and yes it is very possible for the chain to destroy a engine
But the chains rarely break but the chain guides do causing the engine to jump timing
And we'll you now know what happens
Valves hit piston = bad day
My remanufactured engine was around 2500
If you buy a used engine put new chains and guides
If you pay someone around 2000 or more in some cases
make sure they have done this job on this engine trust me on that
