Hello, great site, been searching it for over an hour now getting some tips. Heres my question, I have a 94 4x4 with the a4ld auto with overdrive. About 115k on it, never any signs of trouble, has the cooler, we do tow a 3000 boat short distances. Headed home from work early last week as we were evacutated for hurricane Charley. Got stuck in traffic so bad it took 40 minutes to go one mile, :frustrate hit an open stretch and noticed some smoke coming out the back of the truck. Made it a mile and back to bumper to bumper traffic, where I made it 15 minutes and the trans started slippin, would go to 3/4 grand then engage. Limped to a store, took 5 quarts to fill it up, started it and it all ran out the front where the bell housing meets the motor. (front seal?) Ok, tow truck time. :thumbdwn: Well after many quotes of 2200.00 dollars it still sits. Started it today, ran it down the road at 45 mph no problems, pulled into the garage and it slipped for a second. Is it possible I over heated and just blew the front seal? How wuld I know, what do I look for etc... Time and money is top priority, thanks guys, Shawn

Ended up havign an un easy tohguht botu it, so too kit to my trans man to have it checked out and rebuilt.... Supposedly some of the stuff inside gernaded, i cant remember exactly what all it was.....

my rebuild cost botu 1200$

i dotn know where spring hill is..... But i live in winter haven..... The guy i had do mine is Fourth Gear Inc. Which is in Apopka. A very Good guy, well known in the hot rod bussiness..... And very easy to work with, and stands be hind his work, Mine started acting up again, and it was almsot outta warrenty, but nto quite yet, he told me i could either take it to him now, or wait and see what it does, he said if i waited, even if it went a few months outta warrenty he'd still fix it free of charge.....

Great guy if you ask me.... His specialty is Chevy 700R4's but can do anything.... and like i said he gave me a great price...

explorer auto's are horrible! my brothers a mechanic and all he does is workon them and hear about others working on them. from what i hear one problem could be the the trans over heats. if you do fix it get a trany temp. gauge. that will help you watch how hot it gets. also if it is overheating you can get a trans cooler and it just hooks on to the radiator..

We had a similar problem in our 1993 after driving up some steep grades. The tranny overheated, and started to slip really bad. We stopped by a Ford dealer and had around 2 quarts added. Everything was fine until my dad changed the oil and noticed that the oil level was extremely high, while the tranny fluid level didn't register on the dipstick. Anyway, shortly thereafter we spend $2000 on a new tranny.

we had a problem with our tranny too , while towing an empty trailer on the I-77 N going through west virgina at night i noticed a "fog" on the rear glass and it wasnt foggy anywhere else ,and about that same time the check engine light came on , so i pulled over at the next exit and thats when i found out that the fog was actually tranny fluid ! it took 3-1/2qts to fill , looked like it was blowing out through the front seal and thought i was done for BIG TIME ,(did ya ever see the movie wrong turn ??) i let it cool down and the check eng light wasnt on when i started it back up, it went in gear-no problem, seemed ok ,no leaks , so we hit the highway again ,, made it 75 more miles and had to stop and put 2 more qts in,thinking for sure i was gonna need to be towed the rest of the way and have a new tranny put in,while at the gas station i was talking to the attendant and he asked what gear i was towing in ,well, i was towing in overdrive, he said tow in drive and i should be alright,,, well needless to say ,, he was right ,,i didnt have any more trouble with loseing tranny fluid and the tranny seems to be no worse for the wear, it has 150,000 miles on it now and that happened almost 6,000 miles ago. i changed the fluid ,useing 16 qts, by taking loose the line to the cooler and letting it drain into a 5 gal bucket, with the engine running, while adding the new fluid in through the dipstick tube till the fluid level in the bucket reached just above 4 gal , then reconnected the hose , when i checked the level on the stick i had it just about right . a friend of mine has a 92 explorer with a lot less mileage and expierenced the same problem towing a car ,and he was doing the same thing , towing in overdrive, only he didnt change his fluid and hasnt had no problems since either !! maybe youll be alright by changing the fluid ???????
