Nice to find a site that might actually be able to help me iron out the problems I'm encountering with my '93 XLT. Just bought it from a friend and if the odometer hasn't been fiddled with, it has just a little over 37K on it. Engine purrs and is smooth, tranny works fine. It's been sitting for over a year in a garage and the brakes are acting 'crunchy', especially when stopping with the wheels canted a little to the left or right. Don't know whether the AC is R-12 or R-134a but both ports are the same size and so I can't use one of those $30 quickie kits to recharge it. The electric window controls don't work but the same switch assembly on the driver's side runs the door locks and side view mirrors just fine. Fuses are all intact and everything else seems to be good. I think I got a good deal. Thanks for letting me in here. That's a lot of stuff for a first post but any ideas are welcome.

Well you are correct in that the A/C system is still the old R12 system and will need to be converted for R134 it u wanna use it.

as far as the situation on the Driver door switch even tho there altogether there separate systems running the door locks and the mirrors and the windows.

it the first time i have heard the term "crunchy " to describe brakes but anyways i "think" mine might have been doing a similar thing cause it had been sitting for quite abit too but one once i got in and drove it a bit it went away.

Unless you have concrete evidence from the previous owner that the mileage is "only" 37k then it would be a safe bet to a 1 in front of it since most likely the Odometer has rolled over in it life.

Enjoy you stay here :D

cybergasm,
Thanks for the quick skinny on the window controls. Do you think a new or junk yard switch assembly might solve the problem or could be in the wiring? I pulled off the door panel and was able to pull the window down. Need to drive it back into town about 50 miles in South Texas summer heat.

Been reading up R-12 to 134 conversions...might ask my mechanic for an estimate on that one. Thx for the advice.

A junkyard switch may do the trick, if you get lucky and pick one that works. But it also could be in the wires. Find yourself a multimeter and start looking for voltage to the switch, continuity through it when the buttons are depressed and a good ground out of it as well. A Haynes or Chiltons book would be a big help in finding which contacts are which.

Welcome to this forum! You could test all of the connections on the switch with a multimeter. If the switch checks out OK, then check the wiring. Sometimes the connection goes bad in the part of the door where the door opens, and closes. The bulkhead connector in the kick panel sometimes develops connection problems too. Check the ground wiring as well.
