heya guys! found this site and thought i would join up as i have just inherited my grandfathers 1997 explorer AWD.

things i know about my explorer, it has a built trans to handle what ever our best trails here in ****e County can throw at it (Kevlar clutches modded valve-body etc)

3.73 LSD rear end and matching front. firestone destination 235/75/16 tires ( old and worn and dont grip worth a damn lol)

its the good ole SOHC 4.0L with stock EVERYTHING minus a K&N panel filter..

plans to come, small lift (2"-3"), lockers, manual TC and maybe a set of 35's if i can squeeze them under it.

for the motor, im planning cams, exhaust, ported heads and intake etc, larger MAFS, bigger injectors, better tune.

should make for a decent trail happy rig me thinks

i dont have many pics atm but this is what i have for now!

Alright guys, the last few weeks have been horrible with this truck, 2 flat tires, bad 02 sensor etc. but the biggest problems have been this, the dpfe sensor. decided to take a **** after I replaced the upstream bank 1 02 sensor, now its running extremely lean and it almost stalls on quick throttle increases. The other problem Is the transfer case, I was coming home from work and It decides to randomly kick into 4-low while I was doing about 60. Is this a common problem with with the control-trac systems? And where can I find the dpfe for cheaper than $140?

I don't think your AWD transfer case kicked into 4lo (simple fact that it just can't).

But these transfer cases tend to go bad, as for the sensors I have no idea, I freaking hate all sensors!

welcome

It kicked into 4 low and only locked the drivers side hub, when it locked up it Damn near pulled me Into on coming traffic, I pulled over and disconnected the wire loom to the lock up solenoid on the tcase and everything unlocked and its strictly 2wd now and It also threw the cbl on the dash, so its saying the ebrake Is always on.

Hmm seems like quite a doozy then. lol.

No kidding, lol. Any ideas? The truck has been nearly totaled on the drivers side, it was driven into a rock and broke everything suspension and 4x4 related except the LCA and the swaybar... I know for a fact the frame is bent, but this wouldn't have an effect on the 4wd system would it?

Ok so, moving on from The awd system. I ran codes this morning after installing new plugs, so FoRa 8mm wires and a new (used but tested good) coil pack and it came up with code P1131. This code Is the reason I replaced the plugs, wires and coil.

P1131 reads as a air fuel mixture sensor misread
Probable causes are
Engine missfire
vacuum leak
Bad/malfunctioning dpfe sensor
And one other I cant remember
And causes a lean running condition on bank 1.

As I've said ive replaced spark related items, along with the 02 sensor (upstream bank 1), and checked for vacuum leaks (to which I found none).

My question is, where The Hell is the dpfe sensor on this motor (sohc 4.0l)?

I've looked on the internet for a downloadable fsm for the 95-01 exploder and came up with no results and I juat cant justify spending the $30 on a haynes/chiltons.

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys.
