@jimship Welcome to this forum! Hope you find the information here useful.

Provided your Explorer has an OEM transmission, the proper section for your inquiry is here:

Please use the Search Bar in the corner to see if other users have experienced similar issues and have already presented solutions. You'll find that many subjects have already been covered in detail on vehicles of this age. I however did not turn up any similar results in a few quick searches on this topic, so you may find that changing up your keywords and spending a bit of time browsing search results may turn up an answer.

If the issue exclusively presents itself in 3rd gear, it's not impossible that there's an open-and-close fix; I however do not have much experience with transmissions personally, so I would assume that unless specifically 3rd gear has been abused, the rest of the transmission is probably in similar condition. A rebuild would probably be a good idea.

Also not too familiar with 4th-gens, so not sure if the 4.6 came standard with the 6R60 or not. A bit more information would probably lure in the big fish with all the answers.

Happy Explorations!

Moved to 3rd gen section.

The first thing I would do is check the transmission fluid level and condition. The 6R60 transmissions are sensitive to an improper fluid level and/or having old, worn fluid in them. Many times a transmission service will make many issues go away.

If a 4.6 engine, then it has a 6R80 transmission. Wonder when the transmission fluid/filer was last changed if ever?

Only 2009 and 2010 models have the 6R80 transmissions. The 2006-2008 V8 models have the 6R60 transmission. They are basically the same transmission with some minor differences. The odds are that the transmission has never been serviced. The good thing is the 6R60/80 transmissions are one of the most reliable Ford has used in their vehicles. How many miles are on the 2008?

If the trans fluid is good, clean, doesn't smell burnt....and the issue is occasional rather than every time it shifts into third....look into replacing the coils.

Bad coils on a 4.6 will make the trans shift wonky.

Due to RF bleed and close proximity to the PCM...

I DO know this is accurate, and has happened to mine twice.

(hint, Motorcraft coils, while expensive, last a LOT longer than generic crap..)

I second this. Chased this issue for a few years and finally found out that the "Motorcraft" coils I bought off of Amazon were knock offs. Caused all types of drivability issues including killing 3 different TPS. Was a fun time figuring that one out.
