New member from Sweden

Hi,

I bought my first Explorer the other day and drove it up to my parents-in laws place in central Sweden. We have loads of snow here and the Ford really runs well on otherwise difficult roads. It is a 2001 in a decent condition that has run 130000 kms. My wife Cia and our children Tom and Elina really like it!

The only problem I have had so far is with the idle. I bought the car from a fellow in Stockholm, he had not used the car for 8 months and when I took it up north (where it is colder) it is does not start smoothly when cold. The rev goes up and down and finally stalls. I have already read some forum posts and I must say that there are some very qualified people on this forum!

as far as your idle problem goes it sounds like your IAC is bad (idle air control valve) they are a pretty common problem on the 4.0 and cause the problems you have described.

The problem only occurs when the engine is really cold.

I checked with the Ford dealer in the provincial capital Östersund today and they want 1500 swedish kronas (170 usd) just to do a scan! Fortunately northern Sweden is very american when it concerns cars, in every village you find people who are addicted to US-made cars. In Haga (approx. 50 inhabitants) there is a friendly guy called Micke who runs a small garage and he promised to find a solution to my problem. I hope he turns out as good as he sounds. A good mechanic is just as important as a good dentist.

You could buy a scanner for less than what they want to check it.
