Hello!! My name is james, and I just recently joined because within a month, I'm looking to purchase a 97-2000 moutaineer or explorer, with the 302. Ive been searching the forum on and off about differences in model years, issues to look for besides the obvious on these vehicles, and etc. My price range is about 3500 so I know I'm gonna be well over 100 on the clock, is that something to worry about with these vehicles? Given that year range, what is the "least problematic" of the bunch? Thanks in advance for any and all input, looking forward to lurking around on here

Have an 01 5.0 and no real problems 140k just the typical wheel bearings and balljoints

All the 5.0 drivetrains are bulletproof and durable as hell, many believe that the later 4R70 trans is better than earlier, either way the 4R70 is one of the best transmissions Ford made and the 5 Litre engine is also one of the best.

The later bodycans have addressed and upgraded problem areas of the early second gens, also the later model second gens will be in better shape with less miles. Rear wipers are mostly junk and dont work, Heated seats are nice, dead radio displays are common.
As mentioned ball joints and wheel bearings are the consumable.

225k and strong as a bull here, only thing replaced under the hood has been the water pump. Best car we've ever owned.

Bought mine a year ago with 100k on it. It took me awhile to find a low mileage one with the options I wanted, but they are out there.

Thats what I needed to hear, thanks guys. What year did they start offering heated seats? Are there differences with the differential gearing or transfer cases from year to year or trim level?
