Just picked up a neglected 91 Explorer and am interested in fixing it up and making it a good daily driver. It has been sitting for over a year with occasional use but it runs fine and all the safety equipment seems to work just fine. The paint is oxidized but there are no body issues except for paint. The interior is in good shape just need a couple of front seat covers because the leather has a couple of holes in it. It is an automatic transmission with push button 4WD. It mainly needs to be cleaned up and I have changed the oil and need to change the transmission fluid and filter as well. Anyone in Northern California? I am north of Sacramento.....

welcome 91 explorer dude

i got family and some friends in northern cali in san jose. But i am living in southern cali in newport beach.

Chico!

I am coming down to visit my family and friends in San Jose on the 11th and I am going back home to so cali on the 29th.

Welcome! Your north of Sac? Near Yuba City?

NorCal

Yeah I am in between Sacramento and Chico. Live Oak to be exact and I work in Yuba City. Anyone know of a good Smog Shop around this area? I need to get that taken care of ASAP. I am scared just looking at all the miles of vacum lines and canisters etc...... I am assuming you can access the spark plugs through the fender wells if you take the tire off. lol

There used to be a ton of smog/auto shops out there, they were all pretty good, no real problems noted... There was a Mervyns there at one point... I don't remember too well, but near Sears too. Off the main (only) blvd there were auto shops... I haven't been there in while.

Is that part of the 99 still called Blood Alley??

...welcome here and enjoy your 1st gen X...:D

blood alley

They widened 99 almost the whole way to Sacramento now but there are still a lot of accidents, especially if its foggy. People just dont slow down. The commute to Sac is a cinch now though.

There was a smog shop on El Camino and Walnut in Carmichael/Fair Oaks called Carnation... They are excellent! (If they are still there) But that region has a pretty good reputation for smog/auto service (in Sacramento, they'd better) DogFriend might know more about this...

Blood Alley was gross... I'm glad they cleaned it up, but people are still trying to pass and do 85+ Last crash I saw there was grizzly... I never went back.

I have a guy up here who is explored friendly. :D

Hmm... are we missing an "r" somewhere? If not, it's aaalll good!

Welcome to this forum! Somehow I get the impression that more people on the West coast own Explorers than on the East coast. I'm making this assumption from all of the members on this site from California. I've never been to California.

Kinda, but...

California is about cars/vehicles... and we talk about them a lot! That's why I say here you can stare at someones car for hours, but if you look at the driver for more than 10 seconds, watch out! Cultural.

welcom! im in sac (citrus heights)

Citrus Heights is beautiful... Sunrise and Madison (and nearby cross streets) always had problems with hit and runs, and just pedestrians getting hit... has it changed?

Welcome to Explorer Forum!

Thanks for the welcome

I appreciate this being an active community. Nothing worse than a dead message board. Like I said this truck has been sitting for a while so the best thing I can do is drive it to give it a shakedown and see if there are any problems. Once I get it smogged I am thinking a CAT back exhaust would be in order and does K&N or anyone make a more streamlined intake box? Probably some shocks and check all the bushings to see if they need replacing. Nothing too extreme, just a daily driver and casual off road truck.

I'm in Yuba City, too many smog places to list, they are all over the place... between Yuba City and neighboring Marysville. If you have stuff that will fit a 97 2dr exp, shoot me a PM. I have an 86 Bronco II 4x4 4" skyjacker lift. Actually going to smog it today *fingers crossed*
