I hope that someone with more knowledge than I can help with the following issues.
First, my 91 XLT, 2WD Automatic transmission no longer functions in OD. All other gears are fine... 1, 2, D, and R. Thought the trouble might be fluid level and/or filter. Fluid level was fine. Did a fluid/filter/gasket change. Did not help. Talked to a buddy that said it could be the electronic solenoid that tells the tranny what gear it is in. Did the diagnostics on it and was told that the electronics were fine and the tranny needed rebuilding. Does anyone know if this sounds right or if there is something else to check first??? Seriously, it seems kind of extreme considering that there is no issue with slippage, hesistation, or vibration in the tranny. When I did the fluid change, there were no significant metal fragments in the pan, just those found from normal wear. The fluid did not appear burnt, it looked worn but nothing that alarmed me.
Secondly, I just replaced the head gasket about a month ago. Just a couple of days ago the engine started to have pronounced clicking from what sounds like lifter knock on start up (cold or hot). After just a few seconds or a tap of the accelerator, the clicking subsides to "normal". The oil pressure gauge doesn't show low pressure during, or after the clicking. Any ideas as to why?

cant help ya with your A4LD woes, id just get rid of it haha, but ive never been in that boat... had a manual the whole time.

The Oil pressure gauge is a on and off switch, or an idiot light for short. It doesnt actually read the pressure in the engine. It just says it has pressure..? YES... and goes to Normal.

Thanks Creger...

So there are many troubles with my model tranny? Or you just prefer manuals?
I thank you for your responses. Something in my head told me that about the oil gauge. I just didn't listen.
Well, I guess I'll wait it out. The darned transmission is running fine.

Yeah i really just prefer manuals

But from what i understand the A4LD likes to be rebuilt a lot. It can be built, and built work great!

A lot of people go though those Autos like once every year or two.

The manual is just so much more reliable. Not really any stronger... it just doesnt crap out as much i guess.
