Hi and welcome to the forum,

this is the place to ask, it is also good to search all the forums as most of the question will probably already have been asked at some stage or other.

explorer 4ltr 98 on a s plate

  hi i have some serious noise problems coming from the front drive near side
,ihave checked all the cv joints and ujs and drive shafts and wheel bearings there is no play or worn joints i have put the car in drive on a steep slope and floored the accelerator and the car drives perfect stopped and done the same again still no noise or clunking or vibration drives as it should no problems, the minute i stop to go into a garage and pull out i get the knocking and vibration and when crawling along at 30mp the car feels like it has not engaged gear properly on the n/s wheel.wheels and tyres are ok and you can drive as fast as you like with no problems .sometimes when pulling hard up over a hill the car steering pulls to the right and feels very light and this clunking appears.the steering linkage and all associted steering parts are ok.could it be that the electric transfer case is at fault or the electric auto gearbox is at fault?sometimes if i clip the kerb on the nearside all the noise disappears and the car will drive perfect untill i stop again this could be 200plus miles in france the minute i pull out of the garage the noise and vibration starts again thats why i believe it is electrical
the car is on an s plate 98 has only 75k and has a lpg conversion ps.also when i put the drive high the car will pull to the right quite hard ,when i switch to low you can here the drves locate ,i have driven in low but not far as top speed is limited to 20mph when i switch back to auto i feel that by the sound of things the n/side wheel does not engage properley.i hope you can understand all this garble and can advise me.many thanks pete

Only just seen your post. Sorry if you know this but you're not supposed to drive an X on a firm, dry surface in anything other than AUTO. It could be that you are selecting 4x4 High when you really shouldn't be. One more time, only use 4x4 High or Low when driving on loose gravel (and I mean LOOSE) or when driving off road in mud etc, or when you are driving on snow covered roads or ice. Don't be tempted to go from AUTO when driving in the wet. You will damage the transmission/axle/differential train by doing this. It's all in the user handbook that (maybe) came with the car.

Hope this helps.
