1996 Explorer
Hi All,

Just bought a my first Explorer, a 1997 UK import and will be travelling from Scotland to England to pick it up this weekend. It is the 4.0 with a LPG conversion and looks to be in good condition. I will be covering about 600 miles to bring it home so fingers crossed.

I would like some info on the 4 wheel drive and the levelling suspension and would be grateful for any info provided.

Welcome.

The 4 wheel drive system is not a full time setup as there is no central diff. Only to be used on slippery surfaces, like mud or snow, on normal roads leave the switch in 'auto' to avoid windup and damaging stuff.

The self levelling suspension should just work. It uses a sensor attached to the rear axle and an air pump above the spare wheel to feed air ride shocks. The rear sensor is worked by a plastic shaft which does fall off sometimes.

Also make sure that the gas conversion is a 'multi point' system as single ones can backfire and damage the plastic inlet manifold.

Good luck and post some pics.

Thanks Howard,

The Gas conversion is the Dream OMVL with a 90litre under slung tank, just recently bought it and will be driving it home on Saturday. It will replace my 03 Cherokee/Liberty jeep which has been no end of trouble recently, I hope this piece of Uncle Sam works better than the Jeep.

I have read a lot about the cam chain tensioners and what happens if they fail but the car I am getting has had them done so fingers crossed for many miles of trouble free motoring.
