Hi all! thanks for the add to the site! I have just purchased a 2004 4.6 which I call "Red" it is in great condition (my first explorer), I do know that I have to soon replace the timing chain guides/tensioners. I can hear a slight rattle on cold startup and goes away in matter of minutes. Looking forward to exchange information about explorers!

The 4.6 is not as prone to the timing chain issue as the 4.0 SOHC, if I remember correctly. It may be the valves you hear. On your next oil change, substitute a quart of lucas' oil treatment for a quart of oil, and see if it helps. I've had great results with all the lucas products that I've used. Welcome to this forum! Check the oil pressure. Are you using a thin grade oil? You will hear more engine noise with thin oil than thick oil.
