1994 Ford Explorer XLT
Hi. Just registered. I have a 1994 Ford Explorer. I bought it 2 years ago next month for $500. I just love my Explorer.

I just hit 140,000 miles. This why I bought such an older year.

It had some issues. Windows don’t work right, gas gauge didn’t work. Other gauges get stuck. Speedometer goes nuts. Needed suspension work.

passed 1st inspection with just a new radiator mount.

2 inspection- new tires, ball joints, brakes.

ended up replacing fuel sending unit and gauge works. Driver’s window still has issues. Replaced motor but get stuck on track. Passenger doesn’t go down now. Got new motor recently.

had power steering leak over winter. Bought new steering box but need pitman arm but now its not leaking.

My dad is a retired mechanic. Between him
And the boyfriend they brought it back to life.

a few rust issues but its a 94. Recently boyfriend borrowed it. The idiot try’s to pull out a tree stump with my back bumper. Really. It was already rusted. So have straps in place and its a mess. Then he hits a deer with it. Front grill wiped out. 2 days later transmission pissing out everywhere. Cracked the oil cooler. A visit to rockauto. It came today. My dad did a temp fix with a copper pipe so its leaking very little. Being replaced as we speak.

boyfriend off limits to my Explorer. I had to buy the parts. Hes in the doghouse.

trying to find a local explorer for parts.

question is are there other years of the Explorer that can interchange with parts.

Welcome! You have a first-generation Explorer, 91-94 parts should fit (there may be exceptions) Nice score getting it for $500. IMO, a fixer upper is good in that you know exactly what's been done and what shape it's in!

2 years next month. Thanks for the info on the parts. Oil cooler was replaced today so I am at least not leaking transmission fluid. Definitely an eye sore with a missing grill and a bumper that’s bent out of shape and strapped on

people thought i was crazy buying it. The mileage is the reason why. Its rough and tuff and shows its age. But no car payment and i am very thankful for my Dad and labor. Hey it keeps him busy and still knows his stuff at 76.

Getting replacement body parts may be a challenge. Unless there is a good junkyard or source of used parts. Check out the "First Generation" forum here for more info on your Explorer. I like older vehicles, high-tech is impossible to work on for most owners, and fewer parts mean fewer things to break down/replace! Got my 98 XLT 4x4 in March, about 2900 incl. purchase and repairs, but no payments (with interest). Didn't see any better deals/vehicles around here at the time. Very satisfied with my Explorer also!
