So I picked up a 1997 Explorer 4x4 4.0 today...free.

Has 154k miles on what seems to be all original everything.

I don't know alot about Explorers or this year/equipped version.

Any information you can tell me or warn me about the year engine would be great.

How good is the engine, does it handle mods well?

It seems a bit sluggish to me, and I think maybe it needs a tune up or maybe a new motor period.

So thanks for the welcomes and all info given is appreciated.

Yea so I took the X to work today and the Head Mechanic takes a look at it, come to find out the transfer case or the input shaft is crapped out, and it grinds in 4wd high or low.

But I can live with that...lots of "You pull it" yards round here.

But I was thinking I might just gut the drive line and put a 351 Windsor in it with a Bronco trans shaft and axle.
