This is for the 5 speed Mazda on my '94 4.0.

The noise started suddenly, just in the last week. The noise I am getting is a ticking or tapping sound. As I was listening today, I thought "it sounds like a car version for putting cards in your bicycle spokes."

Anyway, the ticking is loudest, in 1st, little less in 2nd, less still in 3rd, gone in 4th, returns in 5th, nothing in reverse. Today, as I was driving slowly through the neighborhood and listening carefully, you can start to hear it as soon as you move the stick into gear from neutral. When I was driving very slowly, I could feel a very slight vibration through the stick when moving it into gear. In general, though, there is no rough shifting or serious vibration occurring, just the noise.

I probably won't have time to pull the tranny for a few weeks, but need some ideas on what this might be. I am guessing a bad syncro would cause very rough shift, maybe it could be a broken shift arm? I really don't know.

Thanks!
