I have a ford explorer xlt v8 my o/d light comes on after 5minutes of drive and its blinking. What does this mean? Is it ok to still drive it?

blinking O/D light

According to your Owner's Guide:
"Overdrive off: Illuminates when the overdrive function of the transmission has been turned off, refer to the Driving chapter. If the light flashes steadily or does not illuminate, have the transmission serviced soon, or damage may occur."

It usually illuminates when the PCM "determines" that shifting is not operating correctly. There are probably related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that can be read by a fully capable DTC reader. Ford has enhanced DTCs that usually can't be read by generic DTC readers.

Absolutely correct techguru! You need to get the codes to give you an idea on what the problem is. There are many posts regarding these "junk" transmissions. More than likely, it is the servo's or the solenoid pack. There is a quick less expensive aftermarket fix that works, but it will come down to what the code diagnostic is. Sometimes the truck is not worth what a dealer or private mechanic will charge for repairs because the norm is between 2500 to 4000.

My transmission is different I believe. Mine is a 5r55s or w on a 2004 4.0 liter however last year when mine started flashing i found a burnt spot on the valve body separator plate gasket near the O/D valve and then later found that the insides of my torque converter were coming apart.

Before I found these on my own I was not able to find a transmission shop that wanted to do anything much other than to rebuild or replace my transmission. I think it is more cost effective for them and less time consuming.

I had a torque converter code, can't recall the exact number.

Sorry for the delay. Code is P0775 "Pressure Control Solenoid B". These solenoids are electronically controlled, correct? The reason I am asking is because I believe there is a small vacuum leak somewhere (fluctuating idle when below operating temp). I don't know enough and have not found any clear answer as to whether or not a vacuum leak could cause a solenoid to misbehave.

"pressure solenoid B" is PCB in the table. A vacuum leak cannot affect the solenoids. However, a serious engine misfire problem could cause the PCM to enter "limp mode" in which the O/D light should flash. Are there any engine related DTCs?

There are no other DTCs stored or pending.

I was just reading over something like this earlier today in the book. The "Vehicle Speed sensor (VSS) and the Transmission Range sensor (TR) all send info to the PCM. The TR sensor also affects the EGR system, Idle speed control and trans axle torque converter lockup.
