I just bought my 1st 4x4. I'm in Minnesota and loving the traction. I got a '95 4.0 with 110,000 miles on it. No dents, no rust, everything works. I don't know what maintenance has been done to it, so I did plugs, wires, oil, air filter. I am going to have a shop do a tranny flush, but they want $100 to do the grease in the pumpkins and transfer case. I have 2 questions:

-How do I do the axles and transfer case myself? (levels, remove old grease, tips)

-Anything else I should be concerned about?

Thanks

Wow your first post, took you a few months, but a big hello to ya!

The lube shops will use a suction device to get all your old gear out of your diffs, otherwise you have to open them up to drain. which would be a chore.
The price seems reasonable. You could always go to the competition and say you were quoted 90 bucks at the other place, and could they beat it. ;)

when we do the pumpkins at work, we remove the diff covers..... thats about it... on the tcase, there should be a drain plug of some sort....

Just make sure that your guy knows what hes doing when you get the Tflush. I just had mine done, and my X is now in the shop geting the transmission rebuilt. Its your call though.

I had mine done, tranny flush, and no problems. After they do the flush,(fluid exchange) have the pan dropped and the filter changed. Then be sure to change the filter once a year from now on. The tranny seems to be the weak link so extra maint. is good cheap insurance.

All that work

you want to do but you don't want to change the tranny fluid yourself? I'd never let anyone flush my tranny! Easy enough to do at home and when you are in there you can check the torque of the valve body bolts. They do get loose, 7-8 ft-lb. Filters are cheap online, bulkpart has the SPX for only $10. Worth it to buy a couple at a time.

-even the front? man that looks like a hassle on mine!

so where is Robsmale?

Its too cold to do anything except maby check the tire pressure in MI & MN now.
Most places around here charge $70 or so for the flush. So flush, trans. case & diff. for $100 sounds good.

The fluid in the T-Case is pretty easy to change. There are 2 plugs, one is lower than the other. The lower plug is on the left side of the T-Case and has "DRAIN" written right next to it. The upper plug is on the upper right side below the speed sensor. It's right under the drive shaft. That is the fill plug.

Remove the fill plug first!!!! Sometimes the plugs can sieze, if you remove the fill first that way you will be sure you can replace the fluid before you drain it all out. Otherwise you would be screwed!

Other than that it's just like changing your oil. However the fill plug is pretty high and you won't be able to tip the bottle up to fill it. You can get a small pump at WalMart for like $3 and pump the fluid into the T-Case. I got a litte squirt bottle and filled it with Tranny fluid and squirted it into the T-Case. Keep adding fluid until it starts coming out of the fill hole.

It takes a touch less than 2 quarts of Mercon ATF, it's a pretty easy job.

Good Luck!
