Having just become the proud owner of a 1998 Explorer, I have read some of the message board postings with a bit of trepidation. The timing chain tensioners seem to crop up very frequently, and as my motor has covered 143,000miles can I expect problems soon? Also the owners handbook suggests a straight 30 grade engine oil, but I've seen a lot of members talking about various multigrades, is there a prefered oil grade for general use? Finally theres a lot of talk about fuel consumption and one member talks of 30mpg, is this based on US gallons. if so the Imperial (UK) gallon is 20% more so can I hope to acheieve 30+mpg? Thanks for the interesting reading its a great user forum
