New Pioneer 2-ways?

Hey guys,

Sorry to ask a question that has been asked, but all the info I found searching seems from a couple years ago.

I recently went and auditioned some speakers to replace my stock door speakers.
pioneer has some new 2-ways that seemed to sound better than other brand 3-ways that were within my price range. (sorry I can`t find the model# I had written down, I`ll find it later, its probably in the truck)

I thought they sounded really good, even better than higher priced 2-ways.

I am thinking of getting 3-ways for the front and 2-ways for the back after looking here, but unfortunately I could not hear any pioneer 3-ways at the store.

I keep reading posts that seem to directly conflict with other posts regarding the difference between 2 and 3 ways.

What is the difference? If 3-ways are so good, then why do they even bother producing 2-ways?? Especially big name companies like Pioneer?

I guess I`m so confused because they sounded so good, and apparently have been redesigned (whatever that means, LOL)

--I plan on eventually buying a deck to replace my stock one, most likely it will be Pioneer as well, I won`t be getting subs or an external amp.
My main music interest is Rock/Alternative so Kick-a$$ bass is not a huge issue like it would be for Rap or Hip/hop fans.

Thanks guys, I know nothing about audio, and my home stereo is so old it has a "loudness" button!

The way I see it is that a 3-way speaker has a tweeter, midrange driver, and subwoofer. A 2-way only has the tweeter and midrange. Ideally you would get a better fullrange sound out of the 3-way. It all depends on what you want your X to sound like. If you want seperate lows(subs) than pick up the 2-ways to fill in the rest of the range. If a speaker is only producing the sound you need it to, it will make the overall sound better. If you have a 3-way speaker and seperate subs, the bass coming out of your speakers wouldn't sound as good as the bass coming out of your subs, and thus interfere with the sound rather than help. This is the way I see it, I could be wrong, and if I am, I'm sure a smarter member will chime in shortly.

i think they produce so many different speakers is so they can have a speaker at every price point.

Id, Not sure if my opinion will help your decision, but here it goes.

I installed a set of the Pioneer 2-ways in my rear and have been very happy with them. I don't compete, but do enjoy my music very much. Would like to one day install a sub and amp, but I'm happy with the way it sounds presently.

Ahh, so If I did one day plan on getting a sub, then It wouldn`t be a bad Idea to get 2-ways? That would make sense I guess.

This is what my system is comprised of and the reasoning I did it this way. I have Pioneer 6.5" components in the front, that is a 6.5" midrange and a seperate tweeter. I did this for the better sound quality of components in the front. I have 2 Resonant Engineering 12 SE's in the way back. Obviously for a LOT of bass. I have a pair of Kenwood 3-way's in the back to fill in everything else. Every pair of speaker is run off it's own amp. This way they get just the right amount of power to sound really good. I put this system together over the matter of 2 years piece by piece. Start with what you want, and work your way up from there.

I have JL 5.25 + 1 components in front (midrange + tweeter), Jensen 3 ways in rear, and an 8" BA sub. I found that having 3 ways in the rear rather than 2 ways provides a fuller sound. And also I have enough bass so I can turn the sub off when I want a little less hit.

Even though they are a tweeter and midrange, I was surprised at the bass they have produced. Nothing to bust the windows, but sufficient for me for now.

You said you put two ways in the rear. What about the front?

I`m looking at my sub options and really don`t want a big box or something back there. Aftermarket single sub systems to fit the storage hole are damn expensive too!
Argh. my eyes.

I have to admit something, I feel like a moron but when I went back to the audio store today, I realize that my post is waaaay off on the brand of the one I liked most.

The speaker subject has been changed to:

Alpine sps-570A coaxial 2-way speaker system (200 Watts peak-40 Watts RMS)

I don`t know alpine from pioneer i guess....

Anyway, I bought them and am about to get busy!
I grabbed four, I figure I will mount the rears first, Fade the stereo to them and see how it sounds inside, If I think they won`t do, I will take two back and get 3-ways.

Well I ended up putting them all in.

Now I notice the inadequacies of my stock stereo more.

Am I crazy, or is there a slightly different signal sent to the rear speakers?
I swear the fronts sound better, with more highs.
The rears sound muddier.

Overall the bass actually sounds better than the stock speakers did. Although it still distorts easily when you turn it up too high, the bass seems cleaner at lower volumes. They sound really good with my very high tech cd walkman with car adapter!

Oh and the stock speakers say "premium" on them. So is that like "the cream of the crap"?

Yup, best of the crap.

I've noticed many HUs, even aftermarket ones, make the rears sound a little muddy like that. But you'd definately benefit from a good aftermarket HU.
