Hey guys, i have been out a long time because i had a car and school.... But i am selling the charger (see my thread below for pics) so i am ready to get back at my mounty!

I would like to get some new black rims for the truck. I was looking at some crager soft 8's or something similiar (bascially something cheap off of summitracing). i was looking at the 15x8's. My question for you guys is this.

I currently have the warrior shackles, and 1.5-1.75 of torsion twist in the front. I want to get some new tires once i get the rims. so two part question.

If i wanted to run 33" is that possible? if i got a rim with more backspacing? I really do not understand the backspacing very much at all. i think stock is 3.75"???? basically i want my tire to stick out of the fenders more to give it the really aggressive work.

so.... 15x8 rims what back spacing to stick out and be aggressive but not kill ball joints/ etc.
and if i wanted to do 33" tires is that possible? what backspacing do i need? i am willing to do some minor trimming to plastic but not to the metal really. if i cant do 33" what backspacing would i need for 32"? 31" i know will fit fine

thanks guys and ladies!

Also since i plan on getting new rims anyhow.... would buy 16x10 or 16x8 inch rims make the tires less expensive?

Wheel width isn't going to make tires cheaper. It depends on diameter. I would go with the 16x8s so that the tire is narrower and taller - less prone to rubbing on the frame and sway bar.

Backspacing is the distance from the inside edge of the rim to the mounting surface.

I've seen anything run from 3.75 to 4.25" BS

trimming will be an inevitability. the amount of trimming always seems to be different for everyone. if you plan on going 33", get an 8" rim. most 33"s out there are 12.50" wide, anything less than an 8" rim might be unsafe. ive seen a few 33" tires that are 10" wide, but if you dont find that size width, just go with the 8" to be safe.

thanks guys. How much trimming are we talking? i can get 32x11.5x15 for 149 a piece for MT tires. or 265x75x16 (31.6) for 153 a piece for MT. Rims are pretty much all the same.

If i got the 32x11.5x15 i would buy new rims obviously so i can adjust backspacing. Stock back spacing is 4.5 from what i can find on the 15x7 rims.
i will be moving to a 15x8 rim. what offset do i need? like i said i want the tire to sit out farther. and i want to be able to run the 32's with the least amount of rubbing i can which would cause the wheels to need to be out farther.... so here is the part i dont understand.... do i need less of a backspacing say 3" or do i need more of a backspacing say 5" on the 15x8 inch rim so that it sticks out farther?

now if i go with the 265x75x16 (31.6") i would get the 16x8" rim. same thing i want to avoid as much rubbing as possible... and i want the tire to stick out past fender for aggressive look. do i need a backspacing more like 5" or more like 3"???

Ive tried reading the whole backspacing forum but frankly it lets me confused.

If you want the tires to stick put more you will need a smaller backspacing, but beware, if the stick out too far you might be in for grief from the cops depending on where you live. If you click on the link on my signature and scroll down to where i went to 33s, there are some pictures of how mine sits to give you an idea. Those pics are of 33 x 12.50" wide tires on 15 x 8" wheels with a 4.25" backspacing.

Nice truck! I think I will go with the 32/11.5/15 on the 15x8 rims.

And I want my tires to stick out farther would 3.5 backspacing be too aggressive and cause problems? Also will the smaller backspacing (making wheel stick out farther) allow the 32" tire to fit better?

edit... upon searching the internet i pretty much can only find rims that are either 3" backspacing. or 3.75" backspacing. is 3" going to destroy my joints and stuff? or will it really not have a horrible effect? and same question will this smaller backspace help me fit the 32" ?

Lono hit the nail on the head. If you look in my registry I have 3.75 BS. I think the newer pics are page 2 or 3

after looking at both your guys pics i think the 3"BS look is what i am going to go for. But i dont want to if its too much stress.... and my initial question will this lesser backspacing making wheels stick out more help with the usual rubbing problems of 32" tires?

also for the cops grief i am not worried... i am a future cop. michigan really doesnt care... and i work for 2 police departments and know enough cops i may be able to get off if i do get any trouble and i am an EMT

People run spacers on their trucks a fair amount. I don't think 3" BS would be that big of a deal. As far as rubbing those won't hit the frame or sway bar. Trimming on the inner plastic will be minimal. Use black zipties where you can to just pull it back and see where that gets you. It's basically trial and error. I don't know of any good trimming threads for ex's/mounties but 35KM2s installed by Offtrac and Lono's trimming thread are both great resources. If nothing else, it'll help you get on the right track.

As far as having fire/ems plates, I'm almost positive they have gotten me out of a couple tickets at least. Love the professional courtesy lol.

thank you! thats the answer i was looking forward. now just to get this car sold! i will be updating my build thread as i get stuff.
and yea being an EMT is great. and half the time im driving im in my cadet uniform anyways haha. and hopefully in 6 months i will be in state trooper school.

Congrats on the wheel/tire project you're putting together as well as your continued professional education and training. Both sound like good times! Make sure you post pics of what you end up getting.

Also, before you go with the 3" backspacing, try to find an off road shop, or a reputable wheel/tire spot in your area, give them a holler, tell them what you plan on running and see what the pros think in terms of safety and possible stress points. Get multiple opinions so you have a firm grasp on the variables in your project. Good luck!

i will have to run down to one of the tire shops... the offroad shop here in lansing is kind of a bunch of idiots. i had initally talked to the about my TT twist and my shackles and they were scared. they said that i can not do that and that it will destory my transfer case and the truck. So basically after "pros" not knowing that it is okay to put bigger tires on an AWD truck and lift it i dont trust them... but i have a guy in plymouth (possibly a member on here) with a fab shop that may be able to help.

Good luck with your project and your training!

thanks! saturday is a big day.

im just going to do with the 32's i will trim if i have to im not too worried. and the 3" backspacing will make them wear but i dont drive nearly as much anymore... and i dont beat on the truck.

a buddy from my hometown is going to get my some HID's for 45 installed. and help me wire 4 offroad lights (on lightbar on roof) to my brights.

and i have a guy in plymouth jays offroad shop (i believe is name) that can do a nice bumper for 350-450 with winch plate and stuff.

so just need to sell car and then im ready to start moving. i think i will do lights, tires, bumper. and then i have a bunch of other stuff in my build thread that im going to do also

Make sure to post pics!

yea i will! i am uploading pics from my upper ball joint installment. check out my thread. also this will all happen this spring sometime...

hey guys hopefully someone looks at this and sees this. you guys were VERY helpful before so let me shoot you this.
i have decided i want to be crazy and just go with the 33's. i will probably just end up getting new 15x8 rims. i understand with only my TT/ shackle AAl that i will rub. BUT will i rub less with say a 15x8 3.75 BS or with a 15x8 3.0BS. the 3.0BS will push the tire farther out so will that decrease the rubbing on the inside but increase on fenders?

if they REALLY rub bad i have decided a 1.5-2.0 BL with the help of KAZER will be in order! so what do you think guys?

also note the bottom half of my front bumper is already trimmed, and my side step/ running boards are gone.
