Howdy Gang,
I just bought a '91 Sport on Christmas Eve. My wife even lets me drive it! Man this '91 is really nice. It has the automatic trans with elect. 4wd/auto hubs. Reading the original window sticker (found it in the glove box) she also has traction-loc, super cooling (whatever that is), captains chairs, power everything, etc.

Question, what would be the first thing to do with a new used 4X4? I checked the engine oil and the trans fluid, but I've been working pretty much all the time through Christmas and tomorrow will be the first day I've had to really check out the EX.

I tried the Hi and Lo at the lot and it seemed to work fine. I though I heard a clicking noise on engage/disengage though.... what are some noises you folks are hearing with your auto 4X4's?

We drove the Ex to Grandma's over Christmas and it did great! It's a very clean one owner truck and we love it! So point me in the right direction as to where to look/ what to look out for!

This board is great! Thanks for any help......FordZilla

First thing I would & did do is buy a Haynes manual. Then do everything recomended by the manual for maint. for the # of miles on the veh. Just assume it has not been done. #1. is changing the trans. filter & fluid.
Good luck & enjoy....

Wow, thanks for the quick comebacks....I did pick up a Haynes manual last weekend. There were no service records with the EX...but it is extremely clean with one owner on the title (who paid cash), so I am hopeful. There are a couple of Ford Dealer mechanical update stickers under the hood...can't make one out but the other is for a radial arm bushing kit in '95. The other looks like "fan pan" or something done in '92.

Some other goodies about my Ex....factory 235 inch tires with deep dish alloy wheels...
HD gas shocks
skid plates
4.0L engine
3.73 gear
Colonial White exterior with gray cloth interior.

The original salesman's business card was in the glove box...I may call the number and see if he still works for that dealer. Might even be able to get some service record info on the truck there....

Thanks again for the welcome and the info....looking forward to tooling around in my Ex tomorrow.

The clunking you here when engaging the 4x4 is just the trasnfercase engageing, and the front wheels locking. Normal and nothing to worry about. I agree the best thing to do is get the Haynes manual.

the clunk is normal like stated, in my explorer the clunk seems louder when engaging Low than it does when engaging high
